II. Course Overview and Format

In this course you will learn how to design and develop web sites using HTML. Throughout the semester you will work on individual and collaborative in-class and online activities, presentations, and individual projects. All required activities are designed to help you learn how to build site and prepare you to be a perpetual learner in this ever-evolving field.

By the end of this course, you will be able to create Web sites which include the following HTML elements:

V. Grading Criteria

Grades. This is a project–oriented class with both theory and practical components. There are a number of factors involved in how well a person performs in this class: reading and thinking, effort, class preparation and participation, creativity, and a certain amount of innate ability.

Proficiency in applying HTML programming and web design are the main goals of the class; however, assessing proficiency in your applications is as much subjective as objective. The standard grade for above average performance is "B." A "B" represents fully adequate work with no major flaws. "A"s are reserved for work that is exceptional, outstanding, creative, and innovative. A standard grading scale is used:

A: excellent, creative, innovative, outstanding ability. An "A" is a reflection of the abilities to spend a great deal of time with the material in a reflective manner, to discuss the material critically and intelligently, and to contribute new understandings to the material through individual initiative.

B: very good, fully adequate with no major flaws, able to apply the material to new problems. A "B" represents mastery of the material and the abilities to explain and to discuss the concepts orally and in writing as well as to create quality projects.

C: average, able to apply formative evaluation concepts and guidelines in ways that are similar to examples provided by instructor and text, it may reflect a few major flaws. Demonstrates basic proficiency with the concepts but lacks a thorough understanding that enable creative and error–free applications.

D: less than average work; may reflect significant errors or misunderstandings. May also reflect a failure to follow assignment instructions.

F: big problems

Grading Factors. The following is an approximate weighting. The instructor reserves the right to change this scheme, based on the needs of the class and changes that may occur during the term.

9 x 20 points each
=180 points
Competency Assignments: 1.) Web Design 2.) Basic HTML Page 3.) Two table exercises 4.) Scan and insert 3 images. 5.) Create Meta tags 6.) Three Frame structures 7.) A form w/radio buttons, checkboxes, text boxes, textarea, and dropdown menues. 8.) Create an image map 9.) Create your own animated Gif
100 points Midterm Assessment
20 points Attendance
200 points Final Project: Web site
500 points Total Points

Class participation and preparation are extremely important. One-hundred percent of what we do in class is driven by collaboration, discussion, and presentation (everyone will be expected to present content and provide instruction on HTML topics throughout the semester), and is dependent upon being prepared for class. If you come unprepared, class can be extremely boring.

VI. Other Policies and Issues

Incompletes

Incompletes are granted only in cases of documented serious illness or family tragedy.

Deadlines

Deadlines are firm. All assignments are due according to the schedule outlined above. Lab assignments should be completed in lab, but are due by the beginning of the next lab period if lab is missed. You will miss a lot of material if you don't attend class and it may be difficult to catch up. If you anticipate a problem with meeting a deadline, take care of it in advance. Assignments turned in after the due date will not be graded. Assignments that are late with an approved excuse are down-graded.

Class Times

Class begins on time. Please do everyone the courtesy of arriving on time and being ready to work. Plan for traffic and parking delays — they are the norm, not the exception.
